DEV-DIARIES

Dev Diary 2026-01-10

Okay, I didn’t start a Ruby meetup in 2025 (it was… quite a year, to put it lightly), but I did get to deliver a talk at the 2025 Ruby Kaigi

The Ruby Kaigi was inspiring, and Matsuyama is a beautiful city. I hope my spoken Japanese improves enough by the time I get out again so I can be a little more social.

I’ve been dusting off a few old projects, and writing up a post about how my monorepo has evolved into using Sapling.

In the course of that, I found I had written a dev diary in 2024 and forgot to publish it. I don’t know how many folks still read this, but I’m hoping this is a welcome addition to someone’s RSS feed.

2026 may be the year I finally ditch Hugo for my blogs. Hugo is fine, but it makes API changes far too often for this blog, and I’m not publishing this stuff frequently enough to keep my old off-the-shelf theme limping along. I’d like to switch out with something built custom from my Emacs, but that’s a project that is entirely dependent on my ability to vibe code the thing.

Flappy Bird in MacOS Finder

This is the kind of game development I can really get behind.

The 16 year effort to emulate the Pioneer LaserActive

LaserDiscs are a fascinating format, and the patience and dedication to get this project done are laudable.

Why Rewriting Emacs is Hard

I’d known about efforts to rewrite Emacs, but had the typical hubris of ‘how hard could it be?!’. Another good one by this author is 100% Lisp Fallacy.
